Youth Ministry Director
Position Description


OVERVIEW
This position leads and directs the church’s youth program for 6th through 12th grade (middle
and high school). The Youth Ministry Director works with the Director of Discipleship and
Family Ministry to plan for the educational and spiritual needs of the youth and is the face of
the Youth Program to the congregation.


CONTRIBUTION TO THE MISSION OF FPC
This position succeeds when every young person encountered is invited to know and love Jesus
and to grow closer to Him in every stage of growing up, when high needs youth feel supported
and included, when we don’t lose youth during key transitions, and when every parent feels
encouraged, supported, and equipped to disciple the young people in their care.


RESPONSIBILITIES
? Oversee all of the programming, teaching, and community building for the youth of FPC
and those young people who engage with our community.
? Partner with the Director of Discipleship and Family Ministry in the training, leading, and
discipling of volunteers involved in FPC Sunday morning programs for youth in middle &
high school.
? Provide oversight and direct involvement with youth programs at Camp McCullough and
youth mission trips.
? Assist the Lead Pastor by providing pastoral care and support for the youth of FPC and
their families.


JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DUTIES
? Draft and execute a plan for achieving goals of FPC Youth Ministry in consultation with
the Director of Discipleship and Family Ministry.
? Keep track of the families of FPC, which include 6-12th grade students and provide
support, encouragement, and help in their vocation of discipling their children.
? Maintain regular communication with youth, parents, and the FPC community -
responsible for communicating youth activities through traditional and modern methods
- print newsletter/bulletin announcements as well as updates via
email/text/website/social media.
? Recruit, train, and support a team of Youth Leaders to help with the mission and ministry
of FPC Youth Group.
? Provide ways for youth visiting FPC to connect with the Youth Ministry and for
participants in the Youth Ministry to get involved in the wider FPC community –
specifically seek out ways for youth to be involved in leading Sunday morning worship.
? Develop and model discipling relationships with church youth.
? Create and staff a discipling and spiritual development program, elements of which may
include youth Sunday school, mid-week Bible studies, etc.
? Offer an outreach opportunity on a regular basis to bring unchurched youth into FPC
(monthly Middle School Hangout, weekend events at parks, etc)
? Manage (do or delegate) all necessary record-keeping and administrative work
connected with FPC Youth Ministry and work with the Director of Discipleship and
Family Ministry in coordinating all components of the programs.
? Assist in planning and recruitment for the Middle School Camp and High School Camp
weeks at Camp McCullough (recruiting staff & campers); assist in promoting Camp
McCullough among church and school families.
? Contact and minister to FPC youth and their parents in times of crisis, and follow up with
absent youth.
? Build a relationship with the Cor Deo community, especially with the 5th-8th grade
teachers, students, and families.
? Regularly plan special youth events: pizza, games, movies, hiking, retreat at camp, etc.
? Organize, fundraiser & plan a mission trip for 8th-12th grade students each year. (Past
examples: Serve Local - VBS/Coffee Oasis, spring break at camp for underprivileged
youth, Gleanings for the Hungry, Guatemala mission trip.
? Have a regular presence in Sunday worship at FPC, and may often participate in worship
by giving announcements, praying, or giving the minute for missions.
? Stay current on personal discipleship and professional development.
? Partner with Bells Program to coordinate schedules, and encourage youth to participate
in both activities.


RELATIONSHIPS
? Reports to the Director of Discipleship and Family Ministry.
? Oversees and is supported by the Youth Team.
? Is expected to cultivate positive relations with all church staff, especially the Director of
Kids’ Ministry and the Camp Program Manager.


QUALIFICATIONS
? Personal relationship with Jesus and required to become a member of FPC.
? Agreement with ECO Presbyterian Essentials and FPC of Tacoma’s theological positions.
? Faith in Jesus Christ that is lived out daily.
? Evidence of personal and spiritual maturity.
? Love for and ability to relate to and communicate with youth and their families.
? Experience (paid or unpaid) in Youth Ministry or ministry-related or youth-related field,
such as education, Christian education, Christian counseling, or athletics.
? College Degree preferred.
? Approved Washington State background check.
? Evidence of steady church involvement and biblical knowledge.
? Cross-generational effectiveness in verbal and written communication.
? Leadership skills and teaching ability.
? Ability to accept and learn from constructive criticism.
? Good stewardship of money and resources.
? Flexibility and team spirit.
? Ability to discern the needs and priorities of the position while working with minimal
supervision.


WORK SCHEDULE
This is a full-time position that involves 40 hours per week and can involve both early mornings
and late nights- sometimes on the same day! The ministry also involves some weekends, such as
retreats, mission trips and summer camps. The Youth Ministry Director is expected to adjust
his/her hours in accordance with staff meetings, committee meetings, church services, etc. in
order to strike the appropriate work/family/ministry life balance.


SALARY
This position is a full-time, salaried, FLSA non-exempt position that serves at the will of the
Pastor and Session. Pay based on candidates’ experience, skills, education, and training.


EVALUATION
Position performance is evaluated annually by the Director of Discipleship and Family Ministry
in accordance with First Presbyterian Church of Tacoma’s Personnel Policy.
